I first got interested in photography in about 1979. My sister was getting married and when I asked her who was taking the photographs she told me no-one, as she hated seeing herself in photos!
Well, I felt that my sisters' day couldn't go totally unrecorded so I took along my trusty.....Kodak 110 Instamatic!!....Anyway, I tried to remember what poses and groups that professional photographers arranged at weddings and tried to mimic them.
When the photos came back my sister was so pleased with them that she asked me to get them enlarged (of course the 110 format wouldn't take a lot of enlarging so I got them enlarged to 5x7" - which was pushing the limits somewhat) and put them in an album. . ..my sister was pleased and everyone who saw them said that they liked them, so it spurred me on to get a 'Proper Camera', so I bought my first SLR a Praktica MTL3.
The Praktica was built like a brick and weighed about the same, but it took a nice photo. Then I bought my 'Dream Camera' (at that time), a Canon A1.
My passion continued for five years and during that time I took another couple-of-dozen or so weddings (my reputation for either taking good photographs. . .or. . .that I was cheap. . . had spread - I rather suspect it was the latter.) I also used to do what I called 'Model Style Portfolios'. These were the equivalent of today's modern studio portraits, with the 'model' in various outfits and her make-up and hair done. These were popular with the girls I worked with.
Then in 1989 my photography had to take a back seat as I started an Open University Honours degree and I was also working full-time so I didn't have any time to devote to my photography. Then after 6 years of study my beloved camera equipment was stolen! I was gutted and so I started to buy some more equipment. . . . . .my enthusiasm was rekindled and I started taking photography seriously again in 1999. . . .much to the chagrin of my husband who I met in 1996 and married exactly one year later in 1997 and knew nothing about just how passionate (he says obsessive) I could be about photography!
